DVDs are dead, try USB drives! Yeah, I know about Netflix and Apple TV

One of the things I don’t really get about movie companies is why do they still have to sell DVDs. I have an old LG LCD TV and it has this (hacked) capability of reading USB drives. I stopped using the DVD player two years ago. I just copy a movie to a flash drive, insert it in the TV’s USB slot and just watch it. Simple as that. No more cables, no more devices, less power used and smaller electricity bills.

I’m writing this because my wife borrowed a DVD from a co-worker. It supposed to be a good movie. I left the DVD at the entrance and there it stood for two weeks, until this morning, when my better half decided it’s time to give it back. Yeah, without actually watching the movie. Basically, we had two options: to rip the DVD and copy the content on a USB drive or watch it on the laptop. Watching movies on the laptop is like so many years ago. I was single when I watched movies in bed, with the laptop on my belly. It was the time when I found TV useless. Well, the only utility was running VH1 in the background.

Yeah, I know there’s Netflix and Apple TV. But they don’t work in my country. I can’t use them. And I won’t use Apple TV for a simple reason: I just don’t need another device near my TV. I already have a digital signal converter for the television set, why use another device? Plus, I already have two remote controllers, why use a third one? Ain’t it stupid?
